The screenplay was also written by the brothers and it differs from the book. The less you know about the movie the better starting point you have. The film is based largely on the mystery of what's happening to the people of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel. Is everything what it seems? Who's dead or who's not?。陈焕文（任达华），家境富裕，留学外国。返港初期，在父亲的公司任职副经理，但事事受到制肘，未能一展所长。更加上文一直立志从事教育事业，於是不顾家庭反对，毅然辞职，怀着一腔理想，加入教师行列。 文与世叔叶兆堂（冯淬帆）任教同一官校，堂执教鞭多年，工作热诚已减，处事但求无过，而文则积极进取，两人作风大相迳庭，因此时起冲突。 但事有凑巧，文因工作关系结识堂妹静珊（庄静而），珊清丽可人，文一见倾心，展开大力追求，却遭堂之强烈反对，加上堂子舜荣亦从中作梗，处处与文为难，令珊对文更有所顾忌，日渐疏远。 荣自小得父母疼爱，无心向学。後转读文任教的一班，行事越加放肆。文虽因静珊事对堂父子俩耿耿於怀，但仍悉心教导荣。惜荣并不领情，反而处处与文作对，令文啼笑皆非。。
