该剧共10集，是纪录片风格，时间设定在第一部电影推出后15年(类似真实生活时间)，讲述东高一群学生设计排演音乐剧《歌舞青春》，发现戏外的抓马跟剧中一样多。每集会有一首新歌，加上一首来自原电影的曲目。。当第二季开始时，时间只过了10天；观众会看到Sutton和她生母Rebecca（Charisma Carpenter）初次见面的情形，以及她们对别人隐瞒真相的理由。Charisma Carpenter在访谈中的原话是“It’s for Emma’s protection….
