讲述了流浪牛仔丹斯雷搭火车到镇上，半途救了德州牛仔杰夫吉普森并意外的获得赏金，丹斯雷回到旧识朵妮家，并一同前往酒店取乐……朵妮介绍三角牧场的工头史屈戴维斯与丹斯雷认识，工头邀请丹斯雷前往工作，杰夫也误打误撞的跟去。新来的女老板波恩小姐想将现有的一万头牛增加到一万五千头，然而临近的卡斯提生怕牧草被吃光，冬天无法存粮生存。决定以铁丝网将湖边的草地围住以做冬粮，丹斯雷对铁丝网有一段旧恨逐欲辞去工作，但波恩小姐相信他的才能极力挽留。恰巧史帝夫赶来五千头牛并支持以枪来解决铁丝网的问题，而丹斯雷教会使用枪的杰夫在酒店自卫杀人，便使丹斯雷决定离开，却遭史帝夫的侮辱，又受朵妮的激励，决定面对铁丝网与史帝夫一博，终于在一场枪战中击败对方，丹斯雷勉励杰夫好好经营牧场，又走上了流浪牛仔的生涯。。1972年，美军在越南溃败撤离柬埔寨之后，纽约时报驻柬埔寨的战地记者辛尼（萨姆·沃特森 Sam Waterston饰）仍留在当地继续采访。柬埔寨人潘迪（吴汉润 Haing S. Ngor饰）是辛尼的当地翻译兼助手。辛尼在潘迪的帮助下，多次化险为夷逃过鬼门关。两人在战火纷飞中结下了深厚的友谊。1975年，红色高棉占领金边。辛尼得以全身而退，然而潘迪却因为没有护照而被捕，开始了生不如死的地狱生活。在柬共的劳动改造中，潘迪目睹了红色高棉政权的残暴血腥，受到了非人的待遇。1978年，越共入侵柬埔寨，潘迪趁机逃亡到泰国边境，与一直在寻找他的老朋友辛尼重逢。 本片荣获1985年第57届奥斯卡金像奖最佳男配角、最佳摄影和最佳电影剪辑三项大奖。。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
