电影讲述3名女性故地重游回到即将解体的母校，回忆青春岁月的故事。影片聚焦职业女性的现实，讨论她们的现实生活与“理想女性生活”的距离。。1950年，山东村妇刘月季接到离家出走多年的丈夫钟匡民的来信，由于当年是包办婚姻，钟要求解除婚姻关系。刘月季带着孩子千里迢迢赶赴新疆，见到了已升任团长的钟匡民，同意跟他离婚。离婚后，月季与大儿子钟槐一起在当地参加了工作，钟匡民则与美貌有文化的秘书孟苇婷结合了。钟槐与钟杨不能理解父亲的做法，认为他就是陈世美，后经多次沟通矛盾化解。钟槐阴差阳错结识了刘玉兰，成亲后不久玉兰因救牧民羊群牺牲，而钟槐也因救人截去一条腿。钟匡民无暇照顾生病的盂苇婷，多亏刘月季竭力相帮，直到文革期间再次发病，关在牛棚的钟匡民都没能与妻子最后诀别。。Post-nuclear-war dramas centering on a small group of survivors now constitute an entire genre in science-fiction films.
